It’s back-to-school time! From System Mechanic, iolo’s flagship software title, is a great way to extend the life of school computers for another year, it always sells well during back-to-school season!
Look out few fascinating statistics and predictions from the 2022 Deloitte back-to-school survey.
- Inflation raises spending by 8%. Economic morale is deteriorating for many households, with 54% expecting the economy to weaken during the next six months. Many are struggling financially—33% state that their household financial condition has worsened since last year (vs. 22% in 2021), and 57% are concerned about the impact of inflation on the cost of school supplies. Parents, on the other hand, are still making it happen. Thirty-seven percent of parents intend to spend more than they did last year, resulting in an 8% annual increase, or $661 per child versus $612 in 2021.
- The market expands. The back-to-school market is predicted to reach $34.4 billion, up 5.8% year over year. While the market continues to develop, it is doing so at a slower pace due to declining K-12 enrollment. Homeschooling is now practiced by 8% of parents (up from 4% in 2021), and homeschoolers are likely to spend 15% less than the average back-to-school shopper.
- Digital is cool. Clothing and school supplies must be replenished after a pandemic-fueled tech binge. Back-to-school spending on technological products is down 8% year on year, while spending on traditional products is up 14% year on year. As people return to the streets, in-store sales rise to 49% (up from 43% in 2021), while internet sales fall somewhat to 35% (down from 39% in 2021). Smartphone shopping usage climbed year on year; however, social media and emerging tech usage both decreased year on year.
- New priorities are emerging. Many people, especially parents, have had to rethink their priorities as a result of the pandemic. Parents are concerned about environmental and mental health issues, which presents merchants with an opportunity to meet new demands. These two groups are willing to pay more than the average: sustainable shoppers spend 22% more than the average, and parents concerned about their child’s mental health spend 8% more.
